Living your life to the fullest…really!

I have recently read a good post on wasting your life away by being a useful jerk. And it made me conscious of the way I lead my life today. It made me realize how I am spending my time. I realized that:

  1. I quit many jobs over the last years. As soon as I became dissatisfied with the atmosphere, how my boss treated me, I quit. And I immediately found a new job. Usually in a matter of a week, two at most. I never ever thought “Yeah, things are retarded here but I shouldn’t quit, because I don’t have a new job waiting for me”. I just quit and moved on. A new job appeared immediately.
  2. I never entered any credit. Credit sucks. I either buy something immediately. If I don’t have the cash, I wait. There is no urgency that will make me become the slave of a bank. Patience, my friend. These are only things.
  3. I almost never watch TV. Maybe I turn it on to see some news (blood, mayhem). I’ll watch a good movie if I happen to have it on DVD, but really, TV just sucks. I just don’t understand how people can follow series, shows. Are they so lazy and desperate for the next distraction? Actually, when I think of it now, I can’t remember when was the last time that I turned the TV on. It happens maybe once in three or four months.
  4. I don’t play games and I don’t have a gaming console. What’s the point of wasting one’s time like that, especially if you are not in your teens?
  5. I follow global geopolitical issues closely. For a long time, I found it hard to understand why some major events happened the way they did. Upon closer scrutiny, I realized that power games are behind every major thing in the world. It’s mostly about money, energy and power.
  6. I don’t give a fuck about what’s happening in some damn country on the other side of the globe, since there is so much that has to be done in my own country. So many people that need help in my vicinity, so many things that need to be set straight here, at home. Demonstrations are for people who actually don’t want to do nothing concrete.
  7. I stay away from Hollywood movies. Blockbusters suck. I want to see a movie that will make me think, that will inspire me, that will educate me. That’s why I mostly watch European, Far East and Middle East movies. There are no Hollywood endings here. Well, because they re not from Hollywood!
  8. I have an iRiver, which helps me deal with my ADD when I am doing manual work, like long Photoshop sessions, tweaking CSS and such. Music helps me concentrate better. And I never think about buying the latest piece of technology, unless there is some real value for me in it. Gadgets are for suckers.
  9. I never understand people who watch TV series and have a need to discuss them. The worst kind are the ones who watch “reality shows”. Shit. I’m sick of that. Get a life.

Enjoying the good things in life

How do I spend my time, then?

  1. I work a lot. Work is play. I enjoy discovering new things and experimenting with them. There is always room for new ideas and concepts. I enjoy working because I managed to create my own job on the Web. I worked for 14-15 hours a day until I managed to quit my 9 to 5 job, the last of many. While working at various of these daytime/office/corporate jobs, I always worked more than I had to. In that way, I learned more, I improved myself and I didn’t have any regrets later.
  2. I read a lot of books. The amount of knowledge available in books is almost infinite. I read all kinds of stuff, from self-improvement, current affairs, arts and humanities to fiction, classical literature and books in foreign languages. Books can enrich you in ways that you can’t imagine. Fuck TV, fuck playing games. Start reading if you haven’t yet. You will become more intelligent and more educated.
  3. I follow global geopolitical developements. I am an avid reader of anything related to politics, geopolitics, history and power. I want to know how things work. I want to be informed. That being said, I stay away from actively participating in politics. I worked in state institutions, and if there is one single piece of advice that I would like to give you, it is this: If you want to succeed in politics, you have to be a fucking scumbag. You have to have a good stomach or be ruthless.
  4. I train in martial arts. All of the above wouldn’t be possible for me to pull off if I wasn’t fit. Grueling workout sessions is what enables me to sit for hours without having to worry if my back will hurt. A body in good shape, a fit, trained body is what makes your mind work better, think more clearly. As the old Latins used to say, Mens sana in corpore sano.
  5. Self-improvement. I like learning new languages, tinkering around with hypnosis and NLP, or improving my memory and speed reading skills. These latter two are especially helpful, they will help you save time.
  6. I spend time with my wife. We like to watch a good theatre play or show, or visit a gallery to see the latest works of art, maybe buy something. This is always interesting, it enriches you and you get to meet new people, make friends, exchange opinions and worldviews and also meet potential business partners. We also go away on weekends, to see new places, to have new experiences. If we manage to have 3 or 4 days off work (her work, mostly, as a freelancer I am free whenever I wish so), we try to find some low-cost plane tickets and set off for some city or country we haven’t seen yet.
  7. Work hard and party hard. I like that. I go out and hit bars with my friends. Getting drunk every once in a while, discussing everything and anything and enjoying life. This is a blast, especially for someone like me, with ADD.
  8. Sex with my wife. This is a primary need, much like food and water. Yet I don’t see it mentioned in any of the hyped self-improvement websites. They can ramble on and on about eating healthy food, working out, and managing these activities with the rest of your busy life, yet no one discusses the thing that sells most, that we like to read about most, and that we all like doing and thinking about most. Make love, have sex, fuck. This is one of the best ways to spend your time. And if the person that you are doing this with is someone you love, than bingo! You are being intelligent.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. You can learn to play an instrument, start singing or learn classical or modern dancing. You can get involved with a club that matches your interests. You can do a thousand things that will make you feel better, that will enrich you and empower you. Shed bad habits and have a blast while living your beautiful life!

I leave you with these words from the great norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen:

There is always a risk in being alive, and if you are more alive, there is more risk.
