If you have answered “Yes” to any of the questions posed above, then I urge you to read on. I will show you where you can find resources to educate yourself without going broke. In fact, you’ll see how you can do it for free.
The Web is rife with pirated educational materials
What never ceases to surprise me is how many people out there still don’t know where to get ebooks and videos on any imaginable subject there is. Especially educational materials. My favourite sources are:
AvaxHome.ru is a website where people post stuff that can be downloaded directly from some web hosting service. Here are a few things that you should know about Avaxhome.ru:
- The links to various kinds of materials can be found on top of the website. The stuff you want to find is usually posted in the sections eBooks, Video and Software.
- Register there by using an e-mail address that you keep for such purposes. If you don’t own one already, open it now, either on Yahoo! or MSN. Remember: Never use your main e-mail address to register at websites such as the ones mentioned above.
- The images on the website are not links to actual stuff. There is a link called “Details…” at the bottom right of each post. This is the actual link to the stuff you crave.
- Downloads are hosted at various web/file hosting services, most of which have ads plastered all over them. Don’t be fooled by these, just look for the download link. After you find it and click it, you will have to wait a little. When the timer has reached zero, you will be prompted a code to enter (this is to avoid automated programs and robots from downloading stuff). And then, the actual download will start. The only service which doesn’t have any ads is Rapidshare. And most files are stored there, which is cool.
- When video material is involved, it is usually split into 7-12 smaller files. In most of the cases, these files are posted on Rapidshare. If you are not subscribed to Rapidshare (and you probably aren’t if you don’t have the money for educational materials), you should know that it allows you to download a maximum of 3-4 files a day, at certain periods. What I do in such cases is reset my router. My internet provider assigns me a different IP each time a reset my router, so I can download as many files as I wish. If you can’t do this, you will have to wait for larger files and download them over few days.
- Most files are password-protected, so read the original post about the stuff you’re downloading - people who post always mention the password. In most cases, it is www.AvaxHome.ru (exactly as you see it, case-sensitive).
Isohunt.com is a website that searches for stuff that can be downloaded via bittorrent peer-to-peer file sharing system.
- Download a good bittorrent client.
- Search isohunt.com, and use the operators +,”" (quotation marks), etc, to make your search more specific - sometimes you will be offered hundreds of search results.
- Clicking on a result will expand it. Inside you can see all the files that are being shared for the torrent you selected. On top of it, there is a big link called “Download .torrent”. Click on it and the torrent will be downloaded to your computer. Your bittorrent client should automatically open it. If not, set your computer up so that it does so.
What about ethics?
When starting from scratch, pirated materials are the only way to learn something. Once you become proficient at what you do and start earning money from it, buy books, videos, etc. I bought the stuff that I found useful.
I have so many books about so many things related to being a webmaster, that I don’t even count them any more. I still download stuff. If I find something useful, I go over to Amazon or a good bookstore and I buy it. I respect the persons who took the time to write a book and by buying it, I support them. If the book/video that I downloaded isn’t of any use to me, I erase it from my hard disk.
And after many years of working as a webmaster, I don’t need as many books as before. I mostly learn from forums and blogs. The advanced ones. All that I know I already teach others to do, on this blog, among other places. And if you have a dream and work and apply yourself to it, you will realize it. Pirated materials will help you along the way, until the day comes when you’ll earn money from what you learned and buy all the books that helped you become what you are today. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!
