I want to share with you something that you maybe already know: Owning a blog is a much better way of gaining traffic (and money) than owning a portal or a forum.
I have launched a portal recently, with pure pristine original content, all handmade by me. I worked on it quite a lot. And it doesn’t get that much traffic. I am promoting it, and it will gain more traffic in the long term.
I have launched this blog of mine that you are reading at this very moment just a few days after my portal. Evernerve.com has 4 times more traffic than my portal. It has a PR 4, gained very quickly (I think the factor behind this is that I have a backlink from seobook.com). Google just loves WordPress. My blog gets crawled every single day. I can’t say the same for the portal.
Why blogging rules
A blog is really the easiest way to catch attention and pull in traffic. If you leave a comment on someone else’s blog and your website URL, that other blogger will surely check out your website, and some of his/her readers too.
If you link to someone’s post in your blog, they will check it out and appreciate it. And they’ll start linking back and spreading the word about your cool articles and posts via social bookmarking services.
Post your honest and biased opinions and people will either relate to you and feel a connection because they think in the same way about any subject you might have written about, or they will jump at you because they happen to have a completely different opinion. It doesn’t matte, really: You get more traffic in both cases.
Portals and forums can gain traffic and be profitable, but in the long run. Because unlike a blog, these two take some time to take off.
If you like to communicate with people, if you feel that you must express something, start your own blog. On your own domain.

Great post, thanks so much for the advice! I’m in the process of starting my own blog as well, also on my own domain name (jenaelee.com– check it out when it’s in a few weeks!). I was wondering this very thing, how I was gonna get traffic, etc. Good points, I’ll take them!
