Here’s a rundown of the most important events that will transpire in 2008. Sorry, you won’t find no tech stuff here. The events listed below will have an impact on people’s lives more than any new gadget or community website will ever have. So, educate yourself a bit about the world that we live in.
Note: The text in italics is my own commentary.
January
1.
- Slovenia assumes the presidency of European Union (EU).
- Cyprus and Malta adopt Euro (€) as national currency.
- In France, the ban on smoking is extended to bars, restaurants and hotels.
This sucks! In any country! Why aren’t there bars for smokers only? Passive smoking hurts non-smokers, I agree, but why can’t smokers have their own havens where they could indulge in tobacco and nicotine? Places which would be reserved for smokers exclusively? Fascism, I say! - Japan assumes the Presidency of G8.
- Libya, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Croatia and Costa Rica become non-permanent members of United Nations Security Council.
5.
8.
- Parliamentary election in Pakistan.
20.
22.
- US President Bush makes his State of the Union speech.
23.-27.
- The World Economic Forum will be held in Davos, Switzerland. The forum’s main theme in 2008 will be “The Power of Collaborative Innovation”.
Expect massive demonstrations. The Swiss police will have their hands full with protesters. Also: this has nothing to do with the Forum, but I just want to point out a fact that you perhaps didn’t know about: Women were granted the right to vote in Switzerland at the federal level in 1971. Really nice.
28.
- The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of EU member countries will have to decide if they will send a civilian mission which should replace the UNMIK in Kosovo.
Kosovo is set to proclaim independence in 2008. This will possibly spark off an international crisis and maybe another regional conflagration. Major trouble looming on the horizon. Kosovo has been considered a possible source of a major global conflict decades ago, topping the Middle East on the list of flashpoints. I hope that the status of Kosovo will be resolved in a peaceful manner.

I seriously doubt that Robert Mugabe will give up the power.

September
16.
- General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
- National election in Angola. This is the first time that the election will be held since 1992, the start of civil war.
Note: Angola is a country rich with oil. In Africa, oil is a rather a curse than a blessing.
October
15.
- Presidential election in Azerbaijan.
- Parliamentary election in Slovenia.
- Parliamentary election in Lithuania.
November
4.

This is an event of major global importance. The results of the election will be felt everywhere in the world in the next four years, whoever wins.
